Crazy Hair

I finally managed to get C's hair into braids. It took me about 10 minutes per braid and they were so tight that they stood stiff in the air like antlers, none-the-less they were braids. No small feat as the hair gods haven't really blessed her with lovely long locks.

Looking into the mirror she was ecstatic which was pleasing to me. Going about our day-to-day business she got plenty of compliments on her hair-do. I couldn't help but think how silly I'd look sporting the same hairstyle and how she will express utter embarrassment 15 years from now upon seeing these same photos. At 2.5 it's cute but at 31 it is freaky and strange.

I've only read one book so far this year (which probably means I've read the one book that I will read this year) and in it there is a line which had an impact on me:

"Margaret used to say that women often made the mistake of keeping their hair in the style they adopted when they were at their most attractive. They hung on long after it became inappropriate, all because they were afraid of the big cut.." Sense of Ending by Julian Barnes.

I think this is true for most of us. I'd cut off 18 inches of hair a couple weeks before reading the book. If I hadn't I probably would have done it immediately after. Here's to crazy hair dos & change.
